High-velocity, hailstorms damage orchards in Kashmir

Weather improves in Valley after incessant rains

Srinagar, Apr 21 : High-velocity hailstorms today caused massive damage to orchards and standing crops in various parts of the Valley. The weather improved today after several days of incessant rains that led to drop in the temperatures in Kashmir.
Massive hailstorms created havoc in many areas of Kashmir, especially in Kulgam, Baramulla and Anantnag districts.
Kulgam district in South Kashmir faced the maximum brunt as hailstorms caused huge damage to orchards and vegetation.
Growers from various areas of the Valley said that extensive damage has been done to their orchards and crop fields due to hailstorms and other climatic events.
The growers urged the Government to compensate them for huge losses for the past many years.
Meanwhile, Director Agriculture Kashmir, Chowdhary Mohammad Iqbal said that Kulgam remains much affected due to the hailstorm that hit the Valley. “Our teams are on the ground to assess the damage,” he said.
A Meteorological department official said that “mainly dry weather to isolated very light rain and thunderstorm” was expected during two subsequent days.
Srinagar recorded a low of 6.2°C against 7.9°C the previous night and it was 2.7°C below normal for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of 4.4°C against 7.2°C the previous night and it was 3.1°C below normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 3.5°C against 2.6°C the previous night and it was 0.5°C below normal for the tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of 3.7°C against 6.2°C the previous night and it was 3.9°C below normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 1.0°C against minus 0.6°C the previous night and it was 4.3°C below normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 4.4°C against 6.7°C the previous night and it was 3.2°C below normal for the town.
Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 2.6°C and 2.2°C respectively.
