BSF to take up matter with Rangers: IG

JAMMU, Nov 25: The Border Security Force (BSF) is all set to raise a 10-metre high embankment along International Border in Jammu frontier to secure people living in border belts from Pakistan firing.
“The embankment is being raised to secure people living along the (international) border and working close to the fence from falling victim to the firing from across the border at the time of tense situation, Inspector General BSF, Jammu Frontier, S S Tomar said at the sidelines of a blood donation camp organised at BSF Headquarters at Paloura on the eve of 49th Raising Day of the Force today.
He said the embankment will be 135 feet wide and 10 meter high from Akhnoor sector to Kathua, covering three districts of Kathua, Samba and Jammu. The issue will be discussed with Pakistani Rangers also.
“The BSF in co-operation with the State Government, will acquire the land in 122 villages along the border in the three districts,” he said.
He added that overall situation along the border is normal and peaceful after October 29 flag meeting.
Mr Tomar said the things have settled down along the IB after October’s shelling and firing. “The life was back to normal on the border,” he added.
He said the land acquisition for raising the embankment is in the final stage. Disclosing that the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) would execute the project, he added that no deadline has been set so far for start and completion of the work but asserted that the work would start soon as soon as the process of land acquisition was completed.
The IG BSF said the Centre Government would make the payment for land acquisition through the State Government.
“The embankment would generate confidence among the people of border areas to carry out their agricultural activities freely, The proposed alignment would be behind the border fencing and flood lights,” he added.
Mr Tomar said a total of 122 villages would be covered in the embankment project in three districts of Kathua, Samba and Jammu along the IB. The actual work, for which a date was yet to be finalised, would start from village Manyari in Kathua district, he added.
About actual cost of the project, Mr Tomar said since the project was devised three years back, the cost now had to be revised.
He said before starting the actual work on the embankment, the BSF would take up the matter with Pakistani Rangers.
Worthwhile to mention here that during construction of fencing, some BSF soldiers had been killed and others injured in Pakistan firing. However, since the work is being taken up on the international boundary, Pakistan shouldn’t have any problem.
