SRINAGAR, Apr 29: Amid erratic weather, Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) today issued an avalanche warning in Baramulla district where there was snowfall yesterday.
The JKDMA said that a ‘low danger level’ avalanche is likely to occur above 3000 meters above sea level over Baramulla in the next 24 hours.
“The people living in these areas are advised to take precautions and avoid venturing into the avalanche-prone areas till further orders,” the SDMA said.
Over the last few days Kashmir has been lashed by widespread rains while there was light overnight snowfall in the ski resort of Gulmarg. The Meteorological Department (MeT) had predicted erratic weather till May 7.
The MeT said widespread light to moderate rain were expected from May 2- 3. During that period light snow over higher reaches in Kashmir is also predicted.
The recent rain and snowfall has brought down day as well as night temperatures across the valley. While day temperatures are running around 10 degrees below normal, there was a drop of three to four degrees in night temperatures in the valley.
Srinagar recorded a low of 6.5°C against 7.0°C the previous night and it was 2.8°C below normal for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of 6.8°C against 6.6°C the previous night and it was 1.0°C below normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 4.2°C against 3.5°C previous night and it was 0.2°C below normal for the tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of 5.7°C against 5.2°C the previous night and it was 2.4°C below normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 1.0°C against minus 0.5°C previous night and it was 5.2°C below normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 5.6°C against 3.4°C the previous night and it was 2.2°C below normal for town.
Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 2.2°C and 4.6°C respectively.
