JAMMU, May 5: The J&K Social Welfare Department has provided a grant of Rs 10 lakh to SOS Children’s Village of India, the largest self-implementing NGO for child-care in the country. This grant will be utilised to enhance the well-being of the children living at SOS Children’s Village Jammu, encompassing their educational, nutritional and healthcare requirements.
Speaking about the grant, Sumanta Kar, Secretary General, SOS Children’s Villages of India, stated, “With the help of the grant received for Children’s Village at Jammu, expenditures including education, food, clothing, and other amenities will be covered, ensuring fundamental needs of each child is fulfilled. It is a significant contribution towards the betterment of the lives of children in need. SOS Children’s Village Jammu is dedicated to providing a loving home and a bright future for vulnerable children. Our aim is to make a safe and nurturing environment accessible for all the children who have lost or are at risk of losing parental care.”
At present, over 119 children are being supported at 12 family homes and 3 youth homes under the Family Like Care programme at SOS Children’s Village Jammu, ensuring each child receives family like care, love, and holistic development till the time they become self-reliant. The grant announced by the Social Welfare Department, Jammu will be utilized towards providing essential amenities to the children at SOS Children’s Village Jammu, ensuring they receive a safe and nurturing environment.
Established in 1964, SOS Children’s Villages of India provides children without parental care or at the risk of losing it, a value chain of quality care services that goes beyond childcare alone, ensuring comprehensive child development. The NGO’s customized care interventions such as, Family Like Care, Family Strengthening, Kinship Care, Short Stay Homes, Foster Care, Youth Skilling, Emergency Childcare and Special Needs Childcare are aimed at transforming lives and enabling children under care into self-reliant and contributing members of society.
The organization empowers vulnerable families in communities to become financially independent, thereby enabling them to create safe and nurturing spaces for children under their care. Today, over 6,500 children live in more than 440 family homes, inside 31 SOS Children’s Villages of India, in 22 States/UTs, from Srinagar to Pune and Bhuj to Shillong. They are lovingly cared for and nurtured by over 600 SOS Mothers and Aunts.
