JAMMU, May 31: Principal Sessions Judge Udhampur Haq Nawaz Zargar today awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed fine of Rs 1 lakh on two narco smugglers namely Gowhar Ahmed Khanday and Abdul Qayoom Khanday from whom charas was recovered.
After hearing Public Prosecutor Koshal Kotwal appearing for the Police, the court observed, “offence of which accused have been held guilty is heinous and encompasses the society as a whole under its sweep particularly the youngsters and other vulnerable sections of the society. Thus, showing any leniency to the guilty convicts will amount to doing cruelty to the innocent public/ persons including children who will likely to be affected by this menace”.
“In the circumstances, the convict namely Gowhar Ahmed Khanday, son of Mohd Ramzan Khanday of Shopian is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years and to pay a fine of Rs one lakh for commission of offence under Sections 8/20/29 NDPS Act. In case of failure of convict to pay the fine, he shall further undergo rigorous imprisonment for one year. The period of imprisonment already undergone by the convict during investigation /trial shall be set off from the period of sentence”, the court said.
Furthermore, the convict namely Abdul Qayoom Khanday, son of Wali Mohd Khanday of Shopian has been sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years and to pay a fine of Rs one lakh for commission of offence under Sections 8/20/29 NDPS Act.
