Toll Tax on Basmati

In a surprise decision, the State Government has revived toll tax at Lakhanpur on export of broken Basmati rice thus nullifying SRO 83 of the State Government according to which the practice of charging Toll Tax at Lakhanpur on export of Basmati and the broken Basmati rice was stopped with effect from April 1, 2008. Revoking of this practice and imposition of toll tax has hampered the export of broken basmati rice. Consequently a delegation of the Chamber of Commerce, Jammu called on the Principal Secretary Finance and brought to his notice the difficulties created for the exporters of basmati rice in the State. The delegation also brought to the notice of the finance secretary some more problems of traders in Jammu and demanded that spare parts brought from outside the State be inserted in PMC registration certificate to avoid the hassle of seeking permission each time when imports are made. We may remind that R.S. Pora has had the reputation of producing and exporting finest basmati rice and many people are engaged in this trade that earns foreign exchange to the country. The Government has to give incentives for expanding foreign trade and not put curbs to discourage the people involved in it.
