SRINAGAR, June 14: The first ever awareness program cum workshop on the Organ Donation and Tissue Transplant was organized by Department of Bio-resources and Department of Home Science, University of Kashmir and JK Science Technology & Innovation Council, JKDST in collaboration with State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) J&K under the aegis of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt of India.
The program witnessed participation by Medical professionals, Educational professionals and students from various departments from University of Kashmir.
The programme was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor KU, Prof Neolofar Khan who said that such programmes should be organized regularly to raise awareness for organ/tissue donation.
Saurabh Bhagat, Commissioner Secretary JKST&IC, drew attention towards the lack of awareness and understanding among the general public regarding organ donation and tissue transplantation.
Prof Pervaiz Koul, Director SKIMS, motivated all to become an organ donor and save lives of many who are waiting for organ transplantation. Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir, Registrar KU said that such collaborative effort is the need of hour in present times.
Prof Elias, Nodal Officer SOTTO J&K, cleared the myths about the organ donation and inspired the audience for taking the pledge for organ donation after death.
On the occasion, Prof Nilofar and other dignitaries released a book related to breast cancer, authored by Dr Manzoor Ahmad Mir, HoD Bio-resources.
The inaugural session was then followed by technical session where several eminent speakers from different medical institutes delivered their talks in a very understandable manner.
The event also witnessed the presence of various Principals from several GMCs of J&K. Dr Tariq Syed Qureshi, Principal GMC Anantnag, said nothing can be more self-less than truly giving those in need, a ray of hope and more precisely, a second chance to live.
Dr Mohd Ashraf Bhat, Prof and Head Department of Nephrology, SKIMS Soura talked about chronic kidney disease and it’s prevention and management. Prof. M Saleem, HoD Urology and KTU, SKIMS Soura, spoke on `Kidney Transplantation: The Challenges and the way forward’. Dr Mohammad Ommid, Prof Department of Anesthesiology GMC Srinagar, gave a presentation on `Brain Stem Death: Donor Identification and Certification’. Dr Aalia Rasool from GMC Srinagar talked about corneal blindness and need of eye donation in Kashmir. Dr Yasfir Bashir from Eye Care and Research Centre Srinagar spoke on Cornea Transplantation and Corneal Donation from Islamic perspectives.
The event concluded with a valedictory function and vote of thanks by Dr Manzoor A Mir, Head Department of Bioresources.
Whole event was anchored by Dr Manzoor Ahmad Mir, Department of Bioresourses, KU and coordinated by Anshu Sharma, Consultant (IEC/Media) SOTTO J&K, Irfan Ahmad Lone, Transplant Coordinator SOTTO J&K and Nisha Choudhary, DEO, SOTTO J&K.
