Srinagar, June 20: Lagama village in the Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, situated near the Line of Control (LoC), has become an inspiring example of communal harmony amidst the prevailing tensions.
Perched on the slopes of a high mountain, overlooking the scenic River Jhelum, Lagama village is located just 5 kilometers away from the LoC. Despite the challenges posed by three wars and frequent cross-border shelling, the village’s unique social fabric showcases the strength of communal unity in the face of adversity.

Lagama is home to people from diverse faiths, including 74% Hindus, 18% Muslims, and 0.8% who have continued to live together harmoniously, undeterred by external circumstances.
Bharat Kumar Sud, the President of the Municipal Committee Uri said that the village has remained a haven of peace. “I am proud to live here. Since 1947, we have peacefully coexisted, even amidst the line of fire during three wars. Recently, a temple was inaugurated by a local Muslim cleric. Muslims have never felt like a minority here. We visit their homes during festivals, and I pray that Lagama village remains in peace always,” he said.
Kanchan Raina, a resident of Lagama, emphasized the peaceful coexistence among different religious communities. “We live harmoniously with each other-Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. We celebrate festivals together, like Eid and Diwali. We happily coexist without any disturbances.”
Isma, another resident, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the peaceful interaction between Hindus and Muslims in Lagama. “We live together peacefully, sharing our daily lives, attending school, and playing together.”
