NEW DELHI, Dec 10;
Parliament today joined the international community in celebrating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, saying this is a gift to humanity.
In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Meira Kumar said on this very day in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the
United Nations General Assembly recognising the inherent fundamentals rights and freedoms of all human beings across the world.
Ms Kumar said these inherent fundamentals are protected by this declaration.
The Speaker said the inalienable rights of every individual are enshrined in the Preamble of India’s Constitution.
She said, “Our country has zealously safeguarded human rights of all citizens irrespective of caste, creed, race, religion or gender and has constantly strived to attain them.
Ms Kumar said on the occasion, the country needs to take a pledge to promote and protect these rights for all.
In the Rajya Sabha too, Chairman Hamid Ansari read a reference on the World’s Human Rights Day today. (UNI)
