Three former Chief Ministers — Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti — were among those who offered prayers at Hazratbal.
Smaller gatherings were reported at all Muslim places of worship across the Valley, except for the historic Jamia Masjid in old city.
The authorities refused permission to the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid to hold prayers at Eidgah.
There was much festivity across Kashmir as people were seen rushing for the prayers early in the morning.
Thousands of sheep, goats and other animals were sacrificed across the Valley as per tradition. People were seen busy in distributing meat among neighbours and relatives throughout the day.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha greeted the Muslim community on the occasion.
“Eid Mubarak! Greetings to the people on the holy festival of Eid-ul-Adha. The joyous occasion inspires each one of us to follow the path of love, compassion & forgiveness. May the festival of Eid-ul-Adha usher in peace, prosperity & happiness for all,” Sinha tweeted.
Leaders of political parties of Jammu and Kashmir also extended Eid greetings to the people.
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah told reporters after offering the prayers that the Centre should not push through with the Uniform Civil Code and rethink consequences of implementing it.
“They should rethink about it. This is a diverse nation, people of different races and religions live here and Muslims have their own shariah law,” he said.
The NC president said the Government should think and rethink about the consequences of implementing the UCC. “They should keep all this under consideration and instead of pushing it through, they should think of the consequences. Lest, there might be a storm,” he added.
Abdullah also welcomed the pilgrims visiting Jammu and Kashmir for the annual Amarnath yatra.
“I welcome the yatra. I pray to Allah that it is successful and the yatris return with blessings,” he said.
