JAMMU/SRINAGAR, July 4: Heavy rain lashed many parts of Jammu region today, bringing sharp fall in temperature while a car was washed away in flooded Nallah in Bari Brahmana area.
At around 9 am today, it became nearly ‘night scene’ in Jammu as thick dark clouds over cast the sky. The vehicles were seen moving on the city roads with their head lights on. It was followed by heavy rain and hailstorm at some places in the region.
For more than an hour, heavy downpour over-flooded the city roads, lanes and drains while flash flood was witnessed in many Nallahs in urban and rural areas, causing disruption in movement of vehicular traffic on link roads specially in Samba, Parmandal, Bari-Brahmana, Gharota, Akhnoor, Jourian and Khour areas.

A car with Chandigarh number washed away at Barhi Khud, near Meen Charkan in Bari Brahmana area today. It was later found trapped in the bushes about 200 meters downwards, away from the road and was later removed from the nallah with the help of a Tractor. The family which had come to the village at their Devsthan, escaped in the mishap.
In Jammu City, water logging in many roads and crossings, disrupted smooth movement of vehicles. Tawi and Ujh rivers besides several seasonal Nallahs were flooded while Chenab river recorded nearly 27.5 ft water during the day. Many parts of Udhampur, Ramnagar, Chenani, Dudu-Basantgarh, Jammu , Akhnoor and Katra experienced heavy rain. The chopper service at Katra Mata Vaishnodevi was also hit due to bad weather for several hours.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained operational despite rain in Udhampur and Ramban areas. Ramban area witnessed light rain but there was massive traffic congestion in this section today. In order to clear the rush on highway, the Traffic Police authorities diverted traffic on newly constructed 2-lane Ramban Viaduct, which is yet to be commissioned officially by a VVIP.
Meanwhile, today’s rain brought great relief to the people of Jammu area from the scorching hot and humid weather conditions. Morning hours witnessed sharp fall in temperature with cool winds blowing, turning weather more pleasant, compared to last couple of days.
A MeT official has forecast scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rains, over Jammu and Kashmir during next two days. Some areas in Jammu region may witness heavy rain on Wednesday, he said.
Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 26.7 degrees Celsius and the day temperature of 34.5 deg C today; Holy township of Katra maximum 32.5 deg C and minimum 19.6 deg C; Tourist resort Bhaderwah maximum temperature of 28.0 deg and minimum 17.8 deg C while Batote town maximum 26.9 and minimum 18.5 degree C temperature today.
Reports from Srinagar said that light rainfall brought respite in Kashmir from hot weather and Weatherman has forecast more rains till July 8.
Srinagar and other places in Kashmir received light rains today in the evening. The light rains have brought relief from the scorching heat.
Director Meteorological department (MeT), Sonum Lotus had forecast cloudy weather with light to moderate rain at scattered places in Jammu & Kashmir today.
He said that there is a possibility of intermittent light to moderate rain, thunderstorm at many places tomorrow. He further said that from July 6-8, the intermittent light to moderate rain shower is expected at many places in Jammu & Kashmir.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a low of 17.8°C against 19.0°C the previous night and it was 0.7°C above normal for the city. Qazigund recorded a low of 17.8°C against 17.0°C the previous night and it was 2.3°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 10.3°C against 11.5°C the previous night and it was below normal by 0.5°C for the famous tourist resort. In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 16.0°C against 16.7°C the previous night and it was above normal by 0.5°C for the town.
Gulmarg recorded a low of 11.8°C against 13.4°C the previous night and it was 0.9°C above normal for the skiing resort. Kokernag recorded a low of 15.2°C against 16.7°C the previous night and it was 0.3°C above normal for the place.
