JAMMU, July 5: The Jammu University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) has said that terms and conditions in the J&K Government’s order on enhancement of age of superannuation from 62 years to 65 years for University Professors are contrary to the UGC regulations.
“The riders that have been imposed in the order are not only superfluous but also run the risk of being used for harassing or playing favorite, more so as the grant of enhancement will be decided on case to case basis,” JUTA said in a press statement, issued here today.
Further, the statement added, these riders are nowhere in practice in the entire country and some of the State Universities of the Union Territory of J&K also follow uniform age of retirement at 65 years without any such scrutiny and hence the riders are discriminatory.
JUTA maintained that the University teachers are always open to any scrutiny and never do they shirk from it. “The teachers for each promotion from Stage 1 to Stage 5 not only get themselves academically assessed but are also interviewed by external subject experts as per UGC regulations and its amendments which are notified from time to time. However, as per the present order, instead of subject experts, the bureaucrats and non-academicians would access a Senior University Professor which is not in good taste,” JUTA added.
Alleging that the whole process, which can be used mischievously, is against the spirit of the rules and clearly undermines the dignity of the teachers, JUTA has called the powers that be, to do away with the riders that have been imposed so that the teachers are able to superannuate gracefully.
