SRINAGAR, July 5: The Department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has achieved a significant milestone after it successfully operated on a highly challenging vascular tumor case.
As per the officials, the patient, a 40-year-old female, was suffering from a pulsatile swelling on the left side of her neck for over a year and sought medical attention at the ENT Outpatient Department (OPD) two weeks ago.
After a thorough evaluation, GMC Anantnag said, the patient underwent an ultrasound neck examination at the Department of Radiology.
“The results indicated a “Carotid body tumor,” a highly vascular paraganglioma arising from the carotid body between the major blood vessels in the neck. To confirm the diagnosis, an MRI neck with MR angiography was performed, classifying the patient’s condition as a “Shamblin II Carotid Body Tumor” on the left side of her neck.”
A team of skilled ENT surgeons, led by Prof. Sajad Majid Qazi and Dr. Aamir Yousuf, along with CVTS surgeons Dr. M. Amin and Dr. Khurshid Ahmad from the Department of Surgery, successfully performed the operation on Tuesday.
The anesthesia team, headed by Prof. Imtiyaz Naqash and Dr. Zaffar Malik, played a crucial role in the procedure. The MRI scans were accurately interpreted by radiologists Dr. Saiqa Shafi and Dr. Owais H. Dar from the Department of Radiology at GMC Anantnag. “The dedicated operating theater staff also contributed immensely to the success of the surgery.”
Remarkably, the officials said, the surgical procedure was completed with minimal blood loss, eliminating the need for blood transfusion. “The patient is currently in the post-operative phase and is recovering well under close observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).”
The ENT Department expressed its gratitude to Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Syed Qureshi, the Principal of GMC Anantnag, and Dr. Aubid Malik, the Medical Superintendent, for their constant support.
