The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways has announced the completion of the 1.08-kilometre-long, two-lane Ramban Viaduct on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Jammu Division. Another two-lane viaduct, running parallel to this structure, is also nearing completion. The completion of the Ramban Viaduct and Jaiswal Bridge will have significant benefits in terms of relieving traffic congestion and addressing bottlenecks on the highway. These infrastructure developments will particularly ease the management of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra, as the viaduct provides an alternative route bypassing Ramban Bazaar. Moreover, the construction of these structures will contribute to the emergence of new tourist destinations and stimulate economic activity in the region.
The Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways has embarked on an extensive construction programme in Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on the development of highways and tunnels. The total investment for these projects amounts to over Rs 1 lakh crore. The construction initiatives aim to enhance connectivity, improve transportation infrastructure, and boost economic growth in the region. The ministry is actively working on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is a vital lifeline for the region. The objective is to upgrade the highway to a four-lane road, ultimately reducing travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to approximately four hours.
The Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, one of the longest road tunnels in India, stretching approximately 9.2 kilometres, is already operational. It plays a crucial role in ensuring all-weather connectivity and substantially reducing travel time on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The ministry is making sure that the remaining portion of the four-lane section of the Udhampur-Ramban-Banihal section of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is completed at the earliest. These projects, along with several others, demonstrate the Government’s commitment to transforming the infrastructure landscape in Jammu and Kashmir. By improving the overall infrastructure and connectivity, the region will experience enhanced transportation efficiency and increased socio-economic growth. The completion of the viaduct and bridge is a significant step forward in achieving these goals.
