Srinagar, Jul 7: The Meteorological office has predicted widespread moderate to heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir during the next three days.
The main activity of the widespread moderate to heavy rain coupled with thunderstorm and lightning is expected during July 8-9, the MeT centre Srinagar director Sonam Lotus said in an advisory issued on Friday.
The inclement weather is likely to affect the on-going Amarnath Yatra, he said and adding the day temperature will see a sharp drop also.
The widespread rains are expected under the influence of monsoon winds and western disturbance.
The MeT said that some places in Jammu division are very likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain whereas heavy rain is also likely at some places of Kashmir valley during the period and there would be decrease thereafter.
“There is a possibility of sharp rise in water level in rivers, local Nallahs leading to flash floods, water logging and may cause landslides, shooting of stones or mudslides at vulnerable places in Jammu and Kashmir”, Lotus said.
The inclement weather may also disrupt surface transport mainly on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, Zojila pass on Srinagar-Ladakh highway and other major hilly roads.
Intermittent rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir resulting in a drop in the temperature on Friday and disrupting normal activities.
Srinagar received rainfall of 1.2mm, Qazigund 1.4mm, Pahalgam 7.8mm, Kupwara 2.7mm, Kokernag 10.2mm, Gulmarg 0.6mm, Banihal 3.4mm, Batote 2.4mm, Katra 0.6mm and Bhaderwah 0.8mm during the past 24 hours till 0830 hours today, MeT office said.
Srinagar recorded a low of 16.8°C against 17.8°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the MeT office said.
The maximum temperature was also recorded 2.9°C below normal of 30.2°C in Srinagar.
Qazigund, on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, recorded a low of 15.6°C against 16.0°C and it was 0.5°C below normal for the gateway town of the Kashmir Valley.
Pahalgam, had a low of 10.1°C against 12.8°C and it was above normal by 1.7°C for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir.
Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 15.3°C against 15.6°C against and it was below normal by 0.8°C for the north Kashmir area while picnic hot spot of Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded a low of 17.7°C against 15.6°C and it was 1.0°C below normal.
Gulmarg recorded a low of 10.2°C against 10.8°C and it was 1.6°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the MeT office said.
Jammu recorded a low of 24.3°C against 24.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.4°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil, he said, recorded a low of 7.8°C and 13.4°C respectively, he added.
