Army jawans assault cops

RAJOURI, Dec 15: Irked over objection on tinted glasses of their officer’s car, Army jawans allegedly assaulted a Police party on naka in Nowshera and severely thrashed the cops, here today.
Armed with sticks and their service weapons, the violent Army jawans allegedly thrashed some passersby who sought to pacify the situation. A Police Constable and SPO sustained serious injuries in the attack.
Police has registered an FIR in this connection under various sections of RPC while Army has also ordered an inquiry into the incident. However, no arrest has been made so far.
The incident took place at Gujral Chowk in Nowshera this afternoon when a Police naka party, led by SHO Nowshera, was checking the vehicles.
During the naka, an Alto car bearing number PB08BF-9322 was signaled to halt as Policemen noticed tinted glasses of the vehicle, which was being driven by an Army Major, posted at Garhi Nowshera.
On being asked to produce registration certificate of the car, the Army officer namely Upsv, failed to do the same and instead of offering any excuse, he started threatening the Police party of dire consequence.
Meanwhile, SHO Nowshera Yash Jamwal personally intervened and asked the Army Major to remove the tinted screen, which was in violation of Supreme Court direction. However, the Major refused to do the same and rang up his unit.
Soon an Army Gypsy appeared on the scene with a number of jawans armed with sticks and service weapons. Without asking the reason of tiff with their officer, the Army jawans allegedly started assaulting the Policemen with sticks and kicks.
A Selection Grade Constable Shafiq Hussain and SPO Shabir Mirza sustained wounds in the attack while the SHO was also thrashed.
Sensing trouble, the SHO allowed the Army Major to leave the scene for avoiding the situation to take more serious turn.
At the time of incident, the officer was traveling with his wife Dr Aria , who is also working in Army as doctor in the rank of Captain, and their one year old daughter.
Later, Police registered an FIR in this connection under Section 353, 382, 148, 332 of RPC and 206, 207 against the Army officer as well as his jawans.
However, according to officiating PRO Defence Jammu, S N Acharya there was no physical altercation between Army and policemen during the naka at Gujral Chowk Nowshera. As per initial investigation , reports about the attack on Police naka party are incorrect and Army has ordered an inquiry into this incident, the PRO said adding that the car has been deposited by the Major at police station.
