Srinagar, July 17: The State-of-the-art Bacteriology Section within the Department of Microbiology of Government Medical College Baramulla was inaugurated today aiming at enhanced healthcare services to the people in north Kashmir.
The inauguration ceremony was led by the Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Ruby Reshi. The event was attended by Medical Superintendent Dr Parvaiz Masoodi, Dr Junaid Ahmad, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology, along with teaching and technical staff.
During the ceremony, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Ruby Reshi emphasized the crucial role that GMC Baramulla plays in providing advanced healthcare facilities to the people of North Kashmir.
She expressed that with the newly established bacteriology section, individuals no longer need to travel to Srinagar for conducting blood, urine, pus, or other culture tests. “These services can now be availed at the Department of Microbiology, GMC Baramulla,” she said.
Dr Junaid Ahmad briefed about the wide range of tests that will be offered in the bacteriology section. These include blood/cerebrospinal fluid cultures, pus and other body fluid cultures, as well as urine cultures.
“In addition to culturing, the bacteriology section will play a significant role in strengthening the hospital’s infection control program. It will conduct surveillance studies of high-dependency units such as ICUs, theatres, and wards.”
He highlighted the importance of surveillance data in creating hospital antibiograms, which will aid in formulating the hospital’s antibiotic policy. This, in turn, he said, will contribute to minimizing antimicrobial resistance by promoting the judicious use of antimicrobial agents.
