MeT forecasts more rains in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 23: Heavy rains in parts of Kashmir led to flash floods killing a woman in North Kashmir and damaging the crops with Weatherman forecasting more rains in next 24 hours.
A woman died after being swept away by water while flash floods wreaked havoc across several villagers following heavy rainfall in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.
An official said that flash floods triggered by heavy rains in peripheral areas of Kupwara caused damages to roads, crops and parked vehicles in areas like Batpora Hyhama, Zurhama and Kalaroos.

He said that a 52-year-old woman identified as Jana Begum slipped into the stream at Nagsari Kalaroos and was washed away by gushing waters.
“Despite best efforts of local residents and the police, she couldn’t be rescued in time and her body was fished out from the stream later,” he said.
The official said that flash floods caused by heavy rainfall led to massive damages in Hyhama, Trumnard Batpora, Kanlibagh Batpora, Manigah and Khumriyal.
“Roads, culverts, crops were damaged and few parked vehicles got buried under the debris that came crushing downstream due to flash floods in Trumnard Batpora,” he said.
He also said that due to landslides at Kachama, Keran road has been shut as precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident. However, all the major roads leading to Tanghdar, Machil are through.
In the meantime, the MeT office forecast fairly widespread light to moderate rains during the next 24 hours.
“The weather is likely to remain partly to generally cloudy with a chance of a brief spell of rain at some places on July 24-25,” he said.
Srinagar and its adjoining areas experienced light to moderate rain that water logged many low lying areas, disrupting normal life.
“Srinagar received 9 mm, Qazigund 22.3 mm rain, Pahalgam 17.4 mm, Kupwara 4.5mm, Kokernag 2.8 mm and Gulmarg 19.4 mm till 8-30 am today,” the MeT office said.
