SRINAGAR, July 25: Smart City Limited is introducing all-weather electric buses in Srinagar, with a trial run in the next two days and full operation in the following few weeks, aiming to have 100 buses in service by November this year.
The administration’s announcement to buy 100 all-weather electric buses each for the cities of Jammu and Srinagar marks a significant turning point in the region’s transport system. These cutting-edge buses are meticulously built to offer a comfortable and welcoming ride for all passengers, with specific consideration paid to the protection of women.
The spacious interiors ensure easy onboarding and deboarding, making them accessible to children and elderly individuals as well. “The buses have all the modern conveniences, including effective heating and cooling systems. CCTV cameras have been installed to provide a secure environment for all passengers, especially women because passenger safety has been taken into consideration,” Iftikar Kakroo, the Chief Engineer of Srinagar Smart City Limited, told Excelsior.
He expressed his excitement for the debut of these technologically advanced electric buses, “These buses are a game-changer, giving a range of functions to cater to the different needs of passengers. We can evaluate their effectiveness and make the required adjustments when the trial run starts in the next two to three days. We anticipate that the entire fleet will be completely operational by October or November,” he said.
He said that the Mobility Card, which allows users to pay with cash and offers a 10% discount on card swipes, is one of the features that will be available. “The TATA-supplied electric buses are anticipated to make a major contribution to cutting carbon emissions and fostering a cleaner environment,” he said.
While elaborating on the purchasing, he said: “We have adopted a new strategy for this project by acquiring the bus services through an open tendering procedure, with TATA securing the contract. This arrangement guarantees a minimum guaranteed daily distance at a fixed cost per kilometer.
He also emphasized ongoing initiatives to create a charging infrastructure for the electric buses, with charging stations being set up at the city’s main depot in Pantha Chowk and many other sites. “As a result, commuters will receive dependable service and the buses will be able to go long distances on a single charge,” he said.
In order to address concerns about narrow roads in some areas, Smart City Limited has proposed two bus types, 9-meter buses for the old city and 12-meter buses for wider roads. “These low-floor buses enhance aesthetics while also enhancing accessibility for passengers,” he said.
While emphasizing the significance of women’s safety during travel, he said: “We have reserved seats for ladies, and we will carefully adhere to this policy. The buses also have a wide aisle, ensuring a comfortable ride for all passengers.”
He added that the Government will set the fare rates, preventing private players from changing them.
