Burn victim succumbs; family stages protest, husband arrested

JAMMU, Dec 19: The irate family members of a woman hailing from village Panyali, who succumbed to burn injuries after being burnt alive by her husband held a protest demonstration outside mortuary of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), here today demanding strict action against the husband. However, as per police sources, the husband of the deceased, who is an Army jawan was arrested this evening.
As per reports, 35-year-old Sharmila Devi, wife of Govind Kumar (Army jawan) of village Panyali, falling under the jurisdiction of Khour Police Station received serious burn injuries on December 8.
She was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) with 90 per cent burn injuries and in her statement to the police, the deceased stated that her husband had an illicit relationship with another woman and when she objected to this, her husband set her ablaze by pouring kerosene on her.
Later the woman was referred to Military Hospital (MH), where she failed to respond to the treatment and succumbed to her injuries late last night.
As the news of death reaches to her native village, the family members and relatives of the deceased arrived at GMCH and held protest demonstration demanding stern action against the accused husband.
Father of the deceased Shamsher Singh stated that the woman, who had an illicit relation with the accused, should also be arrested immediately and strict action should be taken against them.
Senior leader BJP Sat Sharma who also participated in the demonstration demanded enquiry in the incident vis-à-vis severe punishment to the accused.
A case under relevant Sections 302 RPC stands registered at Khour Police Station and investigation started.
