JAMMU, Aug 1: Shanti Gupta Centre for Women’s Studies, MIER College organized a health talk on the topic “Osteoporosis: Causes and Remedial Measures” for the faculty and students of post graduate and undergraduate departments.
The resource person was Dr. Kanav Padha, Consultant Orthopedics, Trauma and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Govt. Hospital Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. The talk aimed to raise health awareness on the prevention, ?diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.?
Dr. Padha opened his deliberations by explaining the concept of osteoporosis, saying it is a medical condition characterized by a decrease in bone density and quality, leading to weak and brittle bones that are more susceptible to fractures. It is often referred to as a “silent disease” because it typically progresses without symptoms until a fracture occurs. Osteoporosis is more common in older adults, especially postmenopausal women, but it can also affect men and younger individuals.
He explained the causes of osteoporosis, such as aging, hormonal change, calcium and vitamin D deficiency, lack of exercise, family history, certain medications, and medical conditions. Dr. Padha comprehensively talked about remedial measures like dietary changes, regular exercise, fall prevention, regular checkups including Dexa scan, recommended daily amount of calcium and vitamin D supplements, hormone replacement therapy, etc.
This was followed by an interactive question and answer session where the faculty members and students cleared their doubts and queries. Dr. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal of the college appreciated the efforts of the Centre and said that such awareness programmes should be held regularly with a view to enlighten the public about the risk associated with untreated osteoporosis.
The programme was coordinated by Rupa Gupta, Director of the Centre along with Dr. Bharti Tandon and Jyoti Sharma convener and member of the Centre.
