Custodial death: Munshi suspended, PP Incharge attached

KATRA, Aug 3: Following alleged suicide by a person in Police custody, here today, Incharge Police Post Banganga was attached while a Head Constable (Munshi) was suspended.
The deceased was identified as Sohan Singh alias Sonu, son of Late Lal Singh, a resident of Purana Darood village, situated on Mata Vaishno Devi Track, who was arrested by the Banganga Police Post on charges of theft in a house at his native village.
He died in police custody under suspicious circumstances, this morning while family members of the deceased alleged that he died due to the torture of Police. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered in this regard.
According to Police, Sonu was arrested late last night in connection with a theft case. He committed suicide by hanging himself with a belt in a Shrine Board toilet adjoining the Police Post where he was taken for defecation, this morning.
Police also claimed that stolen items were recovered on his instance following questioning. However, family members of the deceased alleged that he died due to torture in Police custody.
Taking cognizance of the matter, SSP Reasi Amit Gupta initiated a departmental inquiry to ascertain the facts and also ordered suspension of the Munshi of Police Post Banganga as well as attachment of the In-charge Police Post.
Besides, order for magisterial inquiry in this case has also been issued.
Meanwhile the dead body of the deceased was handed over to family members after postmortem by a Board of Doctors at CHC Katra.
