JAMMU, Aug 22: In observance of ‘Anti-Ragging Week’, the PG Department of Home Science, University of Jammu, organized an awareness programme on `Anti Ragging Laws’, in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority, Jammu.
Prof Samridhi Arora, Head, Department of Home Science, in her welcome address, emphasized that ragging not only inflicts emotional and psychological scars but disrupts the pursuit of knowledge and personal that should define our academic institutions.
Legal Aid Panel Lawyers and members from DLSA Jammu, namely Adv Deepali Arora, Adv Deepali Kapoor, Adv Mamta Kumari and Adv Karan Nagpal were the resource persons for the awareness programme on anti ragging laws.
Deepali Arora, Advocate, J&K High Court, gave a detail presentation on anti ragging and its laws. She provided insides on what is ragging, and its effects and repercussion of ragging. She emphasized that ragging is any disorderly conduct whether by words spoken or written, or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any student, indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities which cause or are likely to cause or are likely to cause annoyance , hardships or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the psyche of fresher or a junior student. She urged the youth to stay away from the criminal act of ragging and also to enlighten others towards the resultant penalties.
Prof Neeru Sharma, senior Faculty member of the Department, highlighted that University has zero tolerance for ragging and the Anti-ragging committees and squads have already been constituted in university to monitor and generate awareness regarding anti ragging.
The other resource persons had a healthy interaction with the students and staff and they responded to queries from students with respect to anti ragging.
Besides the Faculty members from the JU Department of Home Science, including Prof Shashi Manhas, Dr Charu Mohan, Dr Priyanka Sharma and Anu Choudhary, the programme was attended by students, scholars and non-teaching staff of the Department. Vote of thanks was presented by Dr Charu Mohan
