JAMMU, Aug 25: The Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu launched 38th Eye Donation Fortnight today, with an awareness program held in presence of the Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal Medical College, Dr Ashok Sharma HoD Ophthalmology and Dr Narinder Butyal Medical Superintendent of the GMC Hospital.
The event aimed to create awareness about the importance of eye donation and encourage people to pledge their eyes for donation after death.
The Eye Donation Fortnight is observed every year from August 25 to September 8 to promote eye donation and create awareness about its importance. The program was organized by the Department of Ophthalmology at GMC Jammu, which is committed to promoting eye health and preventing blindness.
During the event, Dr Ashok Sharma, HOD Ophthalmology, highlighted the significance of eye donation and the need for more donors. He said, “Eye donation is a noble cause that can help restore sight to those who are visually impaired. One pair of donated eyes can give vision to two people and transform their lives. We urge everyone to come forward and pledge their eyes for donation.”
Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal, GMC Jammu, emphasized the role of healthcare professionals in promoting eye donation and thanked the Department of Ophthalmology for organizing the awareness program.
Medical Supt, Dr Narinder Butyal also spoke on the importance of eye donation and encouraged everyone to donate their eyes after death. He said, “Eye donation is a selfless act that can help someone see the world again. Let us all pledge to donate our eyes and give the gift of sight to those in need.”
The event concluded with the signing of eye donation pledge forms by the attendees, including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The Department of Ophthalmology at GMC Jammu has planned several activities during the Eye Donation Fortnight to create awareness about eye donation and encourage more people to pledge their eyes.
