SRINAGAR, Aug 29: After several days of being reported missing, the body of Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Gurmeet Singh has been discovered in the barrage of the Lower Jhelum Hydel Project (LJHP) in the Gantmulla area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, with the Sikh community demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry.
The Baramulla Police had promptly formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by DySP Headquarter Baramulla, to investigate Gurmeet Singh’s disappearance. In addition to the SIT, a comprehensive operation was initiated, involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), a canine squad, and drone surveillance, while public assistance was sought.
Following an extensive search operation, Gurmeet Singh’s body was discovered in the LJHP barrage. His remains are now being transported to a nearby hospital for medical and legal procedures.
A police official has confirmed the discovery and stated that investigations are underway to determine the cause of Gurmeet Singh’s death. “Once we have any details, we will share them accordingly,” said the official.
The All Party Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC), demanded a CBI inquiry into the engineer’s perplexing demise. The APSCC argued that the involvement of contractors in the unfolding events necessitates the intervention of a seasoned investigative body like the CBI.
APSCC chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina emphasised the importance of securing all records from the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department to ensure a comprehensive examination of all potential angles.
“The lacklustre efforts undertaken by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to locate the missing engineer, who had been unaccounted for since last Friday, are deeply disheartening. The responsible authorities should have taken proactive measures to locate the engineer,” lamented the APSCC chairman.
APSCC members Ajeet Singh Mastana and Principal Niranjan Singh also echoed the call for a CBI inquiry.
