In his address at the inauguration of the ‘Shinon Meeras,’ a Shina Cultural Centre developed by the Indian Army and the Bandipora District Administration, Lieutenant Governor highlighted the significant transformations that have occurred in Gurez over the past three years. He emphasised their focused efforts on improving physical infrastructure, developing a skilled workforce, and creating a favourable environment for new businesses to thrive. The efforts made to harness the tourism potential of Gurez have resulted in a significant boost in tourist numbers. From a mere few hundred visitors annually, the region has welcomed an impressive 35,000 or more tourists this year. This upsurge has yielded positive outcomes for the local economy, creating new employment opportunities.
Gurez has long been neglected in terms of development, despite being in a challenging position due to its history of facing attacks from Pakistan. This neglect had left the local population grappling with everyday issues even after 75 years of independence. Given the economic constraints that prevent industrialisation in every part of Jammu and Kashmir, the administration wisely turned its focus towards tourism as a means of development in the region. Gurez’s natural beauty, combined with its unique cultural identity, serves as a significant asset. The Army recognised this potential and conceived ‘Shinon Meeras’ as a cultural centre dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich artistic heritage of the Dard-Shina tribal community. This initiative provides valuable insights into their culture, language, and way of life. The museum, developed in collaboration with reputable Indian institutions, offers a wide range of attractions. To enhance the cultural experience, an amphitheatre has been constructed with a capacity for 150 people, facilitating local cultural performances during weekends. Furthermore, the museum has a strong online presence through its website and active social media profiles, helping to promote and showcase the region’s unique cultural heritage.
Overall, ‘Shinon Meeras’ represents a significant step towards not only preserving the cultural heritage of the Dard-Shina community but also boosting tourism and economic opportunities in Gurez, ultimately contributing to the development of this distinctive region in Jammu and Kashmir. The administration is taking a comprehensive approach to develop Gurez and harnessing its tourism potential. Resolving longstanding power supply issues and improving the road network are essential steps to ensure that the region can support the growing number of tourists. With tourism already on the rise, attracting over thirty-five thousand visitors by August of this year, it’s clear that Gurez has significant appeal. Bike and motor rallies organised by both the army and civil administration are adding to the attraction, and the opening of ‘Shinon Meeras’ provides another compelling reason for tourists to explore Gurez. The development of a dedicated website to showcase Gurez is a smart move, as it will allow potential visitors to get a glimpse of what the region has to offer, further boosting tourism.
These efforts not only benefit the tourists but also provide ample economic opportunities for the local population. Gurez is being positioned as an additional tourist destination for tourists visiting places like Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam, and it’s clear that major initiatives have been put in place to achieve this goal. The administration’s commitment to this endeavour, along with the support of the army, deserves commendation for their relentless efforts to develop Gurez. This holistic approach holds promise for the region’s future growth and prosperity. Thanks to the combined efforts of the administration and the army, Gurez is now receiving the attention, recognition, and support for development that it has long deserved.
