JAMMU, Dec 28: Police today worked out the burglary of Punjab National Bank’s ATM from Nanak Nagar within 36 hours by recovering the currency chest containing Rs 4.01 lakh worth cash from the house of one of the accused at village Meen Sarkar in Bari Barahamana area of Samba district. Police have arrested one of the accused while eight others were absconding.
SSP Jammu Atul Goel announced arrest of the accused and recovery of currency chest of ATM from the house of one of the accused Chedu son of Hamid R/o Meen Sarkar this afternoon.
Police had recovered hard disk, transformer and other accessories of ATM from a pond near Sarore at Bari Barahamana yesterday while the ATM chest containing Rs 4,01,700 worth cash was recovered this afternoon from the house of Chedu.
The ATM chest had been dumped between cow dung in the house, police said.
While Chedu was absconding, another accused involved in the crime identified as Kalla son of Sheru, a resident of Chinore Farms, Chadgaali in Kanachak, has been arrested.
Police parties headed by SHO Gandhi Nagar Inspector Rajinder Sharma made arrest and recoveries within 36 hours of the crime.
Police said a total of nine burglars were involved in decamping with PNB’s ATM from Sector No. 7, Nanak Nagar on the intervening night of December 26 and 27. They said the burglars had taken only eight minutes (1.55 am to 2.03 am) to decamp away with the unmanned ATM.
The same gang was involved in abortive attempt to take away an ATM from SIDCO complex in Samba few days back, police said, adding the gang had made similar attempts at other places also but failed. They had brought a Mahindra load carrier with them to take away the ATM.
Further investigations in the case were in progress.
