Srinagar, Sept 8: A lung cancer patient was successfully managed by a team of doctors through the newly introduced Bronchoscopic Intervention technique at Chest Diseases Hospital.
Providing details of the case, an official hand-out stated that a 60-year-old male with lung cancer was referred to Chest Diseases Hospital due to a history of shortness of breath and noisy breathing.
“For the management of lung cancer, the patient had previously received chemo-radiotherapy. Bronchoscopy was performed to visualize the patient’s airways, revealing severe narrowing (stenosis) and obstruction on the right side of the lung, which was significant enough to cause the patient’s symptoms. The obstruction was successfully relieved using an electrocautery knife and controlled radial expansion (CRE) balloon dilatation. To prevent or reduce the chances of restenosis and obstruction, topical Mitomycin C was also applied locally at the site of the obstruction.”
The procedure was carried out under conscious sedation, and the patient experienced immediate relief of symptoms. “The patient was closely monitored for 12 hours and subsequently discharged,” the hand-out stated.
The officials pointed out that airway obstruction can be caused by a variety of diseases, both cancerous and non-cancerous.
The procedure was performed by a team of interventional pulmonologists led by the head of the department, Prof. Dr. Naveed Nazir Shah, along with Dr. Tajamul Hussain, Dr. Firdous Manzoor, Dr. Aaliya Azad, Dr. Adnan Hamza, Dr. Hina Mustafa, Dr. Naeem, Dr. Arshid Ahmad, and Dr. Aadil. Anesthesia support during the procedure was provided by Dr. Nazima and Dr. Sadiya under the guidance of HOD Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb. The operating theater technicians included Gulzar, Muhammad Younis, and Hafiz.
