JAMMU, Dec 29: The breast and cervical cancer screening camp was held at Jagti Migrant Township on Sunday wherein free of cost gynaecological consultation, examination and medicines were distributed among patients.
Leading the team of doctors and technicians, Dr Joyti Hak, examined patients and explained the precautions that could be taken to prevent breast and cervical cancers. The Laparoscopic surgeon specialist Dr Sandeep Bhat also checked the patients and prescribed treatments.
Around 100 women were screened and out of which 20 cases were recommended for Pap smear tests and 2 cases for biopsy where three cases were referred to hospital for surgery.
“A focused effort on the prevention of women’s cancer through early detection and timely treatment is the need of the hour,” said Dr Joyti Hak , adding that Pap smear screenings are effective at detecting cervical cancers in its early stage and more lives could be saved if all women had this routine screening.
She also said the most important risk factor for cervical cancer is infection from the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a group of more than 110 types of viruses that can infect the genital tract or cause warts.
The camp was organised by a group of volunteer youth under the banner of Kooshish “the effort” for creating awareness on breast and gynaecological caners among both rural and urban population.
