Srinagar, Sept 11: A four-day capacity-building workshop for Urdu journalists commenced today at the Hazratbal campus of the University of Kashmir.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Neelofar Khan presided over the inaugural function of the workshop. She was accompanied by the Director of NCPUL, Professor Aquil Ahmad, the Dean of the School of Arts, Languages, and Literatures, Professor Adil Amin Kak, and senior faculty member of MERC, Professor Aaliya Ahmad.
The workshop, organized by the National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) in collaboration with the Dean of the School of Arts, Languages & Literatures and the Media Education Research Centre (MERC), will focus on enhancing the skills of budding journalists and those already working in the field.
In her presidential address, Professor Neelofer Khan stressed the significance of the Urdu language and its deep roots in our culture.
She said that our youth are becoming disconnected from our culture, and our vernacular languages have the power to reconnect them with our roots.
In his special remarks, Director NCPUL, Professor Aquil Ahmad, mentioned that NCPUL has a substantial budget for the promotion of Urdu journalism, graciously allocated by the Government, to encourage healthy journalism.
Dean of the School of Arts, Languages, and Literatures, Prof. Adil Amin Kak, highlighted that Urdu has a long and illustrious history and great potential as it is the language of the masses here.
In her remarks, the Director of the Institute of Kashmir Studies (IKS) and senior faculty member of MERC, Professor Aliya Ahmad, spoke about the upliftment of the Urdu language. She also emphasized that journalists need to be good communicators to do justice to their job.
The inaugural session was followed by technical sessions on the future of Urdu journalism and feature writing. Acclaimed media trainer and former faculty member of MERC, Nasir Mirza, and senior journalist Basharat Masood were the resource persons.”
