Terrorism strikes again

An encounter with terrorists in the Gadole area of Kokernag in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district tragically claimed the lives of four security personnel. A Colonel-Commanding Officer of the 19 RR, a Major, and a DySP of JKP were among martyred.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by terrorism and the challenges faced by security forces in the region. The fact that remnants of terrorism are deeply rooted and continue to operate is a concerning reality. Terrorist groups and their handlers have indeed adapted and changed their strategies over time, targeting both civilians and security forces. The incident also underscores the critical importance of acting on specific intelligence inputs, as the joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Rashtriya Rifles did. This incident is not isolated, as demonstrated by the similar attack in May in Halan forests in Kulgam district. These events emphasise that terrorists maintain a presence in various districts and possess the capability to inflict significant harm. Despite Pakistan facing its internal challenges and economic difficulties, it continues to provide support and resources to these groups, leading to incidents like this.
In this modern era, it’s crucial to consider innovative approaches to counter-terrorism. The use of small drones for surveillance and counter-terrorism operations can provide a valuable advantage, allowing for better intelligence gathering and potentially reducing risks to personnel. Additionally, strict adherence to standard operating procedures and a patient approach to eliminating terrorists are imperative. Success in counter-terrorism efforts often requires a combination of intelligence, technology, and a steadfast commitment to safeguard the lives of both security personnel and civilians.
The recent terrorist incidents in J&K following the successful G20 summit are indeed deeply concerning. It is crucial to address terrorism collectively, as it poses a significant threat to not only India but also regional and global security. India has consistently raised concerns about support and financial funding for terrorist groups from certain countries, and international cooperation is essential to combating this menace effectively. Stringent measures and a united front against terrorism are imperative. Collaborative efforts among nations, intelligence sharing, and coordinated action against state-sponsored terrorism can help in the fight against this global problem.
On the domestic front, strengthening the intelligence network to identify and apprehend sympathisers of terrorists is crucial. These individuals often provide logistical support, making it essential to root out their networks. Security agencies possess the expertise and firepower to handle such situations, but it requires sustained anti-terrorism operations and vigilance. Special attention should be paid to the temporary shelters of nomads and remote areas like forests, where terrorists seek refuge. Extensive mapping and combing operations can help eliminate the remaining terrorists. The professionalism of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Army is an asset in overcoming setbacks like these.
Efforts to hound and hunt down the remaining terrorists must continue relentlessly to ensure the safety and security of the region. There can be no compensation for the families of the security personnel; the nation pays homage to their supreme sacrifice.
