SRINAGAR, Sept 15: The School Education Department, Kashmir today urged Government-run schools to refrain from compelling students to stand for extended periods to welcome officials during school visits, with the aim of safeguarding their academic hours and mental well-being.
In this regard, the Director of School Education, Tasaduq Hussian, issued an order expressing concern over the disruptive practices that have become commonplace when visiting officers or guests arrive at educational institutions.
The order highlights the prevalent issue of students being forced to stand for extended periods in queues, both outside classrooms and along reception paths, during such visits. The Director expressed his dismay at the detrimental impact this has on the students, stating, “We cannot allow the mental and emotional health of our students to be compromised when they are subjected to lengthy queues and waiting times.”
Another concern raised in the circular is the environmentally unfriendly practice of presenting visiting officers with artificial floral bouquets or garlands made of non-biodegradable materials. This practice, while intended as a gesture of welcome, poses an environmental burden when these items are discarded. “Our commitment to sustainability should extend to our welcoming gestures,” the circular said.
The circular further criticises the excessive expenses incurred on hospitality and catering arrangements during school functions, deeming them incompatible with the school’s educational mission. It emphasises that such practices create a stark disparity, as some students are offered these amenities while others are not, leading to a clear case of discrimination.
“These practices raise several questions, including their adverse effects on students’ learning opportunities, disruptions in their education, decreased productivity, and a negative impact on their self-esteem and mental well-being,” the order said.
The circular encourages institutions to adopt more inclusive and respectful reception methods that prioritise the well-being of students and guests alike. It underlines the importance of implementing efficient and innovative approaches to ensure a positive experience for all involved parties.
The order called upon all department functionaries, particularly mid-level managers, school heads, and teachers, to discontinue these practices immediately and embrace a more modest and respectful approach during official events.
