JAMMU, Sept 24: Authorities of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu have prevented the institution from a big fraud by two candidates seeking admission in MBBS course under the category of ‘Persons with Disability’ (PwD) by managing fake and fraudulent ‘Disability’ certificates from medical authorities in Poonch.
Official sources told Excelsior that it is for the first time that GMC Jammu constituted its own Medical Board to scrutinize the Disability/ Disability certificate of the candidates seeking admission in MBBS course in PwD category and this initiative of GMC Jammu authorities paid off as they detected that two candidates were seeking admission by managing fake disability certificates.
They said there are four MBBS seats reserved in GMC Jammu under PwD category and after passing NEET Exam and counselling, four candidates namely Agrima Jamwal of Jammu, Ubaid Ahmad Malik of Handwara (Kupwara), Afsana Mehboob of Mendhar (Poonch) and Raja-Naveed-ul-Hassan of Mendhar (Poonch) were allotted GMC Jammu by BOPEE for provisional admission.
“However, during scrutinization of Disability certificates/disability condition of the candidates, it was found by the Medical Board that Afsana Mehboob of Mendhar (Poonch) had 40% temporary disability in her leg (left knee cap) as per the Disability certificate issued to her by CMO Poonch but the GMC Medical Board found that her Disability could be rectified by surgery in any Government sector hospital,” sources disclosed.
They further revealed that another candidate from Mendhar (Poonch) namely Raja-Naveed-ul-Hassan had two Disability certificates issued by CMO Poonch, one of temporary disability (50% in right leg) and another of permanent Disability (50% disability in right leg) but both the Disability certificates were found fake and fraudulent by the GMC Medical Board as the candidate had no disability at all.
“Thus, alertness and vigilance of GMC Jammu authorities prevented the institution from a big fraud by these two candidates and accordingly, Principal, GMC Jammu, Dr Ashutosh Gupta in a letter to Secretary JKBOPEE recommended that Afsana Mehboob and Raja-Naveed-ul-Hassan cannot be given benefit under PwD category and requested BOPEE to take suitable action under rule,” sources claimed.
They said there is every possibility that such type of fraud in MBBS admissions using fake and fraudulent Disability certificates had occurred earlier also as never ever any GMC in J&K constituted its own Medical Board to scrutinize Disability certificate/condition of any candidate seeking admission under PwD category and always relied on Disability certificates issued by the concerned CMO.
They said it has happened for the very first time in J&K that any GMC constituted its own Medical Board for scrutinizing Disability certificate/condition of candidates seeking admission in MBBS course. “This alertness of GMC Jammu prevented the institution from a big fraud and set an example for other GMCs to remain vigilant and in alert mode so that such fraudulent candidates could not snatch the rights of genuine PwD candidates,” sources asserted.
