Bigger task for Red Cross

Official team of State Red Cross led by Honorary General Secretary met with the Governor and gave him an appraisal of the status of both wings of State Red Cross Society. The Governor evinced keen interest in the activities of the Society and also made some good suggestions to improve its performance. We know that Red Cross Society is doing good work especially when there is a natural disaster or calamity. But it is important to bring home to the Society that its services should first and foremost reach the rural and backward areas of the State. If its operations are mostly concentrated in the two cities, then the purpose stands defeated. For example any project pertaining to health services should be floated in remote villages and habitats to give a feeling to the rural population that authorities are deeply interested in their welfare. The Governor has made a very important suggestion that Red Cross should try for the inception of blood banks in the cities and towns if possible. At the moment we do not have any blood bank in the State and that means some precious lives fallen in the throes of death cannot be saved. There are numerous areas in which the State Red Cross can play its role. The Governor is right in asking the visiting delegation to raise funds for building a complex for Red Cross because it is not possible for the State government to provide about 17 crore rupees needed for the project. Corporate Houses and philanthropic organizations need can be tapped for funds. There is vast scope for many activities of the Red Cross and initiatives have to be taken.
