Jora for preserving state’s rich culture, heritage

JAMMU, Jan  4: Extending warm greetings on Losar (Ladakhi New Year) to the people, especially Buddhist community, the Minister for Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora hoped that the Buddhist festival will prove harbinger of peace, progress and prosperity for the State and its people.
Addressing a function organized by All Ladakh Student Association, Jammu (ALSAJ) at Bandhan Resorts, in connection with Losar celebrations this evening, Mr. Jora highlighted the centuries old rich traditions of communal harmony, brotherhood and co-existence of different faiths and cultures symbolizing high values of humanity.
“We have to strive for upholding the values of communal harmony and conserve our rich culture and heritage under all circumstances”, Mr. Jora said, adding we shall have to strike a balance between our traditions and modernity.” He urged the need for acquiring modern and scientific education and advised the students to concentrate on this aspect to make their future bright and prosperous in the present competitive world. He said without education conception of development and prosperity was impossible.
Urging upon students to take keen interest in studies to achieve new heights of excellence, the Minister called for availing the facilities and opportunities being provided to them in the educational institutions of the state.
President of the ALSAJ  Nawang Tundup presented a memorandum of demands which included setting up of a fullfladged  University at Leh, construction of Yatri Niwas in Jammu for Buddhist students, reservation of seats for post-gradation courses in Jammu University for Ladakhi students and scholarships for the Ladakahi students.
The students studying in various educational institutions of Jammu presented a colourful cultural programme depicting the rich cultural ethos of the Ladakh region.
On the occasion, Mr. Jora presented awards and certificates among the meritorious students for their better performance in curricular and extra-curricular activities. These include five students who have qualified in NET-JRF, Gold Medalist in Mathematics Ladakhi student of Jammu University and four sports winning teams of the Ladakh.
A large number of Ladakhi students besides District Development Commissioner, Leh. Simran Deep Singh, IG,  T Phunsog and Director Prosecution, Tashi were present on the occasion.
