JAMMU, Oct 7: Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India, sponsored two- day workshop on `Investment in Agro-Technologies for Self Reliance’, culminated at SKUAST-Jammu.
During the workshop, experts from different universities and institutes of North India including CSKHPKV Palampur; PAU Ludhiana; University of Jammu, IIT Jammu; CSIR-IHBT Palampur and ICAR-IIAB Ranchi made presentations to sensitize scientists of participating institutes including PG & UG students of SKUAST-Jammu.
The deliberations were centred around biotechnological, breeding, agronomical, genomic and engineering aspects for development of agro-technologies to achieve and sustain goal of self-sufficiency in agriculture and allied sectors, in view of the burgeoning pressure of the human population, shrinking natural resources and climatic changes.
The major focus was on interdisciplinary collaborations in research for developing new technologies for improving precision and efficiency in agriculture. Scientists from GADVASU Ludhiana, HAU Hissar, HPKV Palampur and SKUAST-Jammu participated in the discussions in different technical sessions.
The valedictory session was chaired by Prof R K Samnotra, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu, in presence of Prof Susheel Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering; Prof R K Salgotra, Coordinator, School of Biotechnology and Organizing Secretary of the workshop; and Dr Vikas Sharma, HoD Soil Science & Agril Chemistry.
Prof Samnotra emphasized on the role of Agricultural Engineers, Biotechnologists, Agronomists and Plant Breeders in developing agro-technologies for future to achieve self-reliance.
The recommendations of the workshop were presented by Dr Ravinder Singh, Assistant Professor, School of Biotechnology. The valedictory session was attended by Heads of the Divisions, faculty members, scientists from other participating institutes and students of SKUAST-Jammu.
On this occasion, three scientists namely Dr Amrish Vaid, Prof & Head Division of Plant Pathology; Dr Moni Gupta, Professor Division of Biochemistry and Dr Mahender Singh, Chief Scientist Agrometeorology were awarded for their dedicated services in organizing the workshop.
The two day event was organized under the overall patronage and guidance of Dr B N Tripathi, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu. Prof R K Salgotra, presented vote of thanks. Dr Manmohan Sharma, Professor, School of Biotechnology convened different sessions of the workshop.
