SRINAGAR, Jan 8: Police today claimed to have busted a gang of burglars which has been robbing houses in Srinagar for last two years and have recovered stolen items worth lakhs of rupees from them.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, Amit Kumar told reporters that with the arrest of this gang about 15 theft cases in Srinagar alone have been solved.
“Over the last two years a large number of burglaries were reported across Hazratbal zone in the City. We have arrested the gang and recovered valuables including gold jewellery, Pashmina shawls and electronic goods worth about Rs 25 lakhs from them,” Kumar said.
Kumar said police in December 2013 formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SDPO Hazratbal to crack the theft cases.
“The SIT worked hard and zeroed in on a suspect Mushtaq Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Qadir Dar of Narain Bagh, Ganderbal. After sustaining questioning, Dar confessed to the crime and also revealed the names of other members of his gang-Ghulam Ahmad Dar alias Amma Dar son of Mohammad Subhan Dar of Gund Roshan, Ganderbal, and Ghulam Hassan Bhat alias Hannas Bengali son of Mohammad Sultan Bhat of Saidpora, Eidgah.”
The SSP said these thieves confessed their involvement in burglaries in Soura, Nigeen, Lalbazar and on their instances golden ornaments and valuables worth Rs. 25,00000 been recovered so far.
“The burglars revealed that they would carefully recee the target houses during day time, in some of the cases they would hire a rented accommodation close to the target house a month before the commission of offence,” Kumar said.
He said the gang worked in an organized fashion and were operating in Ganderbal, Pulwama districts also.
“The investigations are still going on and further recoveries and arrests of accomplish, abettors and receivers of stolen property are expected in coming days,” he said.
