JAMMU, Oct 26: Jammu and Kashmir Ex-Services League (JKESL) organized a function to pay rich tribute to Brigadier Rajinder Singh, also known as the ‘Saviour of Kashmir’, on his 75th Martyrdom Day, here today.
Army veterans, senior Government functionaries, civil society members and political leaders laid wreaths at the statue of the legendary soldier here at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Chowk.
The speakers, including Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, ADGP Mukesh Singh, former minister Gulchain Singh Charak, Major General Goverdhan Singh Jamwal (ex-president, JKESL), highlighted the supreme sacrifice of Brigadier Rajinder Singh while protecting the state of J&K from the enemies’ invasion in 1947.
Paying tribute to the ‘Saviour of Kashmir’, JKESL president Lt Gen Rakesh Sharma said, “On this day, Brigadier Rajinder Singh laid down his life to save J&K from going into hands of Pakistan. Had he not sacrificed his life, the map of India would perhaps been without crown J&K. He stopped tribal raiders for four days, which provided time for Maharaja Hari Singh to sign the Instrument of Accession and time to the Indian troops to land in Kashmir.”
Divisional Commissioner Jammu said Brig Rajinder Singh and his brace soldiers fought back Pakistani raiders with limited resources and stopped them at Uri for several days, thus saving the lives of thousands of people. He said it was because of Brig Rajinder Singh that we live in a state of freedom as he along with scores sacrificed their lives to safeguard J&K.
On the occasion, a number of cultural activities based on patriotic themes were presented by school children as well as artists of the Department of Information and Public Relations and J&K Academy of Art Cultural and Languages.

Meanwhile, a team of Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) led by ex-president Surinder Singh Gilli and founder member Rajinder Singh paid tribute to Brigadier Rajinder Singh on his Martyrdom Day, also known as Accession Day.
While addressing the media, Gilli said that it was due to Maharaja Hari Singh that today we are proud Indian and it could became possible due to the sacrifice of Brigadier Rajinder Singh who along with his small contingent of about 200 men successfully delayed the advance of a much larger force of Pakistani tribal raiders near Uri for several days, and during this time Maharaja Hari Singh acceded to India and the Indian forces air-lifted for the defence of Kashmir.
YRS members Komal Singh, Mukesh Singh, Vishal Singh, Vikramjeet Singh, Ajay Singh, Udayveer Singh, Bupinder Singh, Akash Singh, Sanjay Singh, Rajeev Jamwal and many other also paid tribute to Brig Rajinder Singh and appeal administration to describe the contributions of our heroes in educational books.
