Tribute paid to heroes of ‘Battle of Zojila’

ZOJILA, Nov 1: In order to pay tribute to the heroes of battle, a function to commemorate Platinum Jubilee of the Battle of Zojila, was held here today.
The function was chaired by Major General Sachin Malik, YSM, GOC, Forever in Operations Division at the Zojila War Memorial, Gumri.
The event included the unveiling of the bust of General KS Thimayya, the architect of the victory in Operation Bison.
Representative of units that took part in Operation Bison, paid homage to the bravehearts, by laying wreaths at Zojila War Memorial.
On this occasion a drawing competition was also organised at schools of Drass region and the winners were felicitated by the Chief Guest.
Ghulam Haider, grandson of Mohd Ismail, a MVC awardee of Op Bison, ESMs, Village Heads, School Children & other dignitaries also attended the ceremonial event.
The audience was acquainted with the renovation of Zojila War Memorial undertaken by Forever in Operation Division, including the display of a T-55 tank, 75/24 Howitzer Gun and 3.7 Inch Gun.
The ‘Battle of Zojila’, also called Operation Bison, was fought from 23 May 1948 to 01 Nov 1948 at altitudes exceeding 11,500 feet.
