Srinagar, Nov 10: The Government Medical College (GMC), Baramulla, has performed a sophisticated surgical procedure involving multiple steps, conducted by a team of surgeons on a 55-year-old male patient.
The patient was diagnosed with stomach cancer, prompting the removal of a portion of the stomach, which was then connected to the intestines.
“Using EGD and CT scans, we identified adenocarcinoma in the stomach and proceeded with laparoscopic-assisted distal gastrectomy, connecting the stomach to the jejunum and performing a jejunojejunostomy,” stated the officials.
Dr. H Vaqar and Dr. Mir Mushtaq led the procedures with anesthetic support from Dr. Waseem and Dr. Yasir, assisted by Ab Hameed, Mudasir, and Nazir Ahmad. Endoscopy was performed by Dr. Zaffer Kawoosa, a Gastroenterologist, at the appropriate stage of the surgery.
Following the removal and connection of the stomach to the intestine, another affected segment of the intestine was also removed and seamlessly connected laparoscopically, eliminating the need for traditional incisions, making the process more manageable for the patient.
Dr. Parvaiz Masoodi, the Medical Superintendent at GMC Baramulla, emphasized the advanced nature of these procedures, requiring specialized expertise and necessary equipment. He confirmed the patient’s positive progress in recovery.
“Such complex procedures are rarely conducted in newly established medical colleges, especially in peripheral areas. Our ability to perform these surgeries with the aid of specialists and advanced medical technology is a significant milestone,” Dr. Masoodi expressed.
Commenting on the significance of this surgical feat, a doctor highlighted the hospital’s capacity to provide a spectrum of intricate treatments that were previously only available in distant locations, requiring substantial travel and expenses for patients.
