‘Under Modi, MBBS seats increased by 79%, MD by 93%’

JAMMU, Nov 10 : Accusing the previous Governments of totally neglecting the medical education sector in the country during their over six decades rule, Union Minister in PMO with independent charge of Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh today said in comparison to that the Narendra Modi Government shifted total focus to affordable and accessible medical education in the country.

Dr Jitendra Singh while talking to reporters here today on the sidelines of flagging off a 32 seater bus donated by State Bank of India (SBI) to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Vijaypur at its camp office, said the Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought several measures to make medical education affordable and accessible, so that no deserving candidate finds himself at disadvantage. The number of MBBS seats increased by 79% from 51,348 to 91,927 while MD seats by 93% from 31,185 to 60,202 in just over nine years, he said.
In a quantum jump, Dr Jitendra Singh said, from 145 Government Medical Colleges in 2014, India now has 260 such GMCs in the country while the number of AIIMS in the country went up to 23 in over nine years, he informed.
Dr Jitendra Singh said this number is near about double than figure of last six decades of opposition parties’ rule. This shows the commitment of Modi Government towards affordable and accessible medical education for the middle class people whose children despite having capability and capacity can’t afford admission in private medical colleges, he added.
He said there has been quantum jump both in Medical Education and Health Sector during last over nine years of Modi Government. He regretted that the health care was neither taken seriously nor was a priority for previous regimes.
Talking about India’s vaccination programme, Dr Jitendra Singh stated that India has emerged as a world leader in protective healthcare. Earlier, the country wasn’t taken seriously as a health care provider, he noted.
The Minister commended Prime Minister, Narendra Modi for freeing the healthcare sector of shackles and doing away with obsolete regulations, adding that a more enabling milieu has been created.
The Minister suggested incorporating telemedicine provision in SBI-donated buses to hospitals on the pattern of Doctors on Wheels facility. He called for an integrated health management protocol to add value to delivering medical services in far-flung areas.
Maintaining that the van donated by SBI can run in peripheral areas, Dr Jitendra Singh said it is a part of new born AIIMS.
The Union Minister also said that he has started Tele medicines in his constituency. “This is a sort of health startup. In first phase we took up Doda district and in second phase border belt of Kathua was taken now it will be shifted to hilly reaches of Bani and Basohli,” he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh said “in preventive health care, world considers India its leader and we gave COVID vaccine to world which is a remarkable achievement of Modi Government.”
Dr Jitendra Singh, while highlighting the success of India’s space mission said Chandrayaan gave very important information which has not even been given by the spacecrafts of America and Russia which landed on Moon much earlier than India.
He said America launched humans on Moon but it was Chandaryaan which gave proof of water on surface of Moon.
The Minister said that Modi Government opened space to private entrepreneurs and media was also not restricted to launch ceremonies of Chandrayaan and the Aditya. He said while 1000 media persons were watching launch of Chandrayan, 10000 media people watched Aditya launch. Earlier no one was allowed during the launch, he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh said that India’s programme is based on private, public partnership. He said earlier the intelligent and capable youth of country were going to foreign countries as they had no resources here but the situation has changed to such an extent that under Modi Government the NASA seeks India’s cooperation now.
Later, the Minister interacted with the students’ and faculty of AIIMS, Jammu. He shared his experiences and offered tips to the students as to how to excel in their field.
Dr Jitendra Singh exchanged views on latest tools of medical practice like Artificial Intelligence, Quantum therapies etc and shared his experiences on the same. He also suggested Theme based CMEs involving multiple streams and disciplines under one roof. He also spoke about integrating clinical medicine with deep technology for drawing maximum outcomes.
On the occasion, Dr Jitendra Singh released a book titled ” Handbook of Policies, Guidelines and Procedures” . The book highlights the importance of collaboration between institutions and conducting trials across multiple centers.
Dr Jitendra Singh also advised the students to work towards realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of a developed nation by 2047.
Director AIIMS Dr Shakti Gupta expressed his gratitude to Dr Jitendra Singh and commended his commitment in coming straight from Telangana to grace the occasion despite his hard pressing schedule.
Earlier in his address during the handing over of vehicle, Vinod Jaiswal CGM, SBI said it is an important and proud day for SBI when AIIMS, Vijaypur and the Bank joined hands. The Bank donated 32 seater bus for medical institute, he added.
He said it is a proud privilege to have AIIMS Jammu and added the Bank every year donates two percent of its profit for welfare of society.
He also complimented Dr Shakti Gupta, Director AIIMS for providing space for Bank branch in AIIMS Vijaypur.
