Jawahar Tunnel in the Pir Panchal at Banihal is the life line for Kashmir and Ladakh region. This has immense strategic importance for the country and the State. Its maintenance is done at high expenditures just because of its utility and importance. The crucial tunnel has grown old as it is several decades old. Naturally it requires repairs and renovations. But apart from that what it urgently requires is enhanced security system.
It is heartening that authorities of Border Road Organization have decided to see to it that security, safety, surveillance and mobility gadgets of the tunnel are upgraded and modernized. This is a big task and needs to be completed as early as possible.
Director General BRO, Lt Gen AT Parnaik, who recently visited the tunnel to take stock of the security and safety aspects, has stated that, advance technology would be used while modernizing the tunnel to make it safer for the users. The BRO personnel deployed at the tunnel for its maintenance deserve appreciation as they confront many challenging circumstances in order to keep the tunnel through for traffic especially during winter months when Pir Panchal witness massive snowfall.
