AIJMS demands probe into rising number of road accidents

JAMMU, Nov 17: All India Jat Maha Sabha (AIJMS) J&K has expressed deep concern over rising number of road accidents in J&K.
In a meeting of AIJMS here today its president, Ch. Manmohan Singh, also former JMC Mayor has expressed deep concern over the rising number of road accidents in J&K.
He urged upon the Government to conduct a thorough investigation to identify root causes of these accidents and take immediate measures to curb them.
A two-minute silence was observed to pay homage to those who lost their lives in the Assar accident in Doda district wherein 39 persons were killed and 17 others were injured.
Manmohan Singh said that Kishtwar and Doda districts have become accident-prone zones, with a disturbingly high number of fatalities in recent months.
He flayed the Transport Department and Traffic Police for failing to take effective measures to prevent overloading and over-speeding, which are major contributors to road accidents.
The Jat leader underscored poor condition of roads in Kishtwar and Doda districts as another factor contributing for rising number of road accidents.
He emphasized on the urgent need for Government to prioritize road infrastructure development in these districts.
“The Government should launch awareness campaign to educate drivers about traffic rules and regulations,” Manmohan Singh maintained adding: “Traffic rules should be strictly enforcement and violators must be penalised as we cannot afford to lose more lives to preventable road accidents.”
Manmohan said that Committees constituted by the Government in past to address the issue of road accidents remained ineffective.
