Portion of NH caves-in, traffic halted

JAMMU, Nov 19: A portion of road caved-in at Kishtwar Pathar area of Banihal on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH) after which vehicular traffic was stopped on both sides of the highway this evening.
When contacted, SSP Traffic, Rohit Baskotra said due to land sinking near Sher Bibi area, one part of NH sank. “Initially single way traffic was through but after the personnel from the concerned company said that first a check was required to be conducted, we stopped the traffic fully from both sides of NH,” he said.
The SSP also said that heavy vehicles like trucks have been stopped at Kashmir and Udhampur and some Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) have been trapped left and right at the site of sinking.
“We have stopped LMVs at some other areas also on NH keeping in view that these are stopped near some eatery,” he maintained adding: “Traffic Police has also appealed to the local people to help the stranded people near their areas in whatever way they can.”
Baskotra further informed that six machines along with the men have been pressed into service for the job to restore the road and whenever it improves the vehicular traffic will be allowed but right now it is closed.
“We know that this is a running highway which when gets closed leaves many travellers trapped so efforts are on to restore it,” the SSP continued.
He appealed to the common people that before starting their journey they should confirm and consult from concerned Traffic Control Units (TCUs).
“We will also update public on social media platforms like X and Facebook,” the SSP Traffic said.
