OSLO, Nov 24: Norwegian defense company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace will start developing new next-generation naval missiles for Norway’s armed forces to deter the “threats of tomorrow,” the country’s defense minister, Bjorn Arild Gram, said on Friday.
“We must start working today to develop a weapon that will protect us from the threats of tomorrow. The new missile will strengthen Norway’s defense and ability to hit targets at long range, and it is planned to be ready by 2035,” Gram was quoted as saying in the government’s statement.
Once the missile is operational, it will be named Super Sonic Strike Missile (3SM) Tyrfing, the statement added. Its detailed technical specifications are not given.
Last month, Norwegian authorities announced plans to increase the country’s military budget by around 20% for 2024.(UNI)
