India has great potential in wool, sheep rearing industry: Khajuria

JAMMU, Nov 25: Romesh Khajuria, Chairman, WWEPC, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India said that India has great potential in wool and sheep rearing industry especially in Himalayan States/UTs.
Khajuria who is on a six days tour to Australia leading a delegation of Indian woollen exporters to participate in Global Sourcing Expo in Melbourne and to have study on Australia wool sector and Australian wool technology. More than 200 exporters participated in this event.
During his tour, Khajuria visited Australia Wool Testing Authority’s testing lab, Australian Wool Export Centre, sheep farms and sought information from ground level to see the technology used by Australian Wool Industry at sheep farm level, testing and certification facilities.
Romesh Khajuria also made a presentation on Indian wool industry and collaboration between India and Australia, stakeholders of the Wool Industry from both the countries participated. Khajuria told that India is importing 14 millions kilos of raw wool from Australia which can be enhanced as Indian Woollen Industry requires 130 million kilograms of raw material wool for its domestic and export needs and India is producing 40 million kilos of wool domestically.
Chairman of WWEPC further said the delegation that Australia can help India in technology transfer, knowledge transfer and engage Indian workforce at Australian farm levels in shearing, classing and other activities.
The meeting of delegations of Woollen Industry from both the countries was presided by Rohit Kansal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. He welcomed the stakeholders of Woollen Industry and also invited them to take part in Bharat Tex a mega event in textiles to be held in February 2024.
Khajuria also stressed upon the need to popularise the campaign “Produced in Australia made in India “.
He also extended gratitude to Dr. Sushil Kumar, India Consulate General in Melbourne for inaugurating India Pavilion in Global Sourcing Expo and interacting with Indian exporters. Khajuria presented Kashmiri shawls to Dr Sushil Kumar, Rohit Kansal and Dr Shaktivel, president, FIEO during their visit to Wool & Woolens Export Promotion Council’s office in the expo.
