AYODHYA/VARANASI/PRAYAGRAJ (UP), Nov 27:
Lakhs of devotees thronged the river banks in Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj on Monday to take a dip on Kartik Purnima.
Security has been tightened at the bathing ghats Ayodhya and Prayagraj towns in view of the mass arrival.
Ayodhya District Magistrate Nitish Kumar said, “We are expecting 30 to 40 lakh devotees in Ayodhya for the holy dip.”
In Prayagraj, Kartik fair concluded on Monday with a ritual ‘snan’ or bath at the Balua Ghat on the banks of Yamuna River in the city.
The event was organised with full cooperation of the district administration and police, an official of the Kartik Mela Organizing Committee of Prayagraj said.
A cultural programme will be held at the ‘ghat’ in collaboration with North Central Zone Cultural Centre later in the day.
Kartik Purnima, which is also celebrated as Dev Deepavali, is the last day of the holy Hindu month of Kartik.
Union Minister Hardeep Puri and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath are scheduled to attend a Dev Deepavali event in Varanasi on Monday evening.
Adityanath, also the mahant at Gorakhnath Math, said the festival has a special significance in Indian culture and provides an opportunity to humans to connect with nature. (PTI)
