Srinagar, Dec 17: The library operational at the new bus stand in Ganderbal lacks basic facilities, prompting students and locals to urge the authorities to take note.
Established over 40 years ago, the library operates from rented accommodation without essential amenities like a heating system, a conducive study environment, or internet connectivity.
Sajid Hussain, a student, voiced concerns about the library’s lack of basic facilities and noted the unsuitable study atmosphere. “It’s a district library used by students across the district, operating in rented space without proper furniture, heating, or updated books,” he stated.
He highlighted the difficulties faced during winter and raised the issue of restricted opening hours. “Students come from far-off places but can only access it during the day; there’s a need to keep it open at night for better study opportunities,” he emphasized.
Due to the absence of internet facilities, students resort to using personal mobile internet, receiving minimal support from the library.
Naushad Yousuf, another student, emphasized the absence of facilities beyond books and stressed the necessity for a conducive environment. “The location is noisy, lacks furniture, has outdated books, and lacks proper washrooms,” he remarked.
Despite raising concerns with authorities through the grievance cell, the students noted no action taken. “We raised the issue with the grievance cell, forwarded to the district administration, but they claim it’s beyond their jurisdiction,” they explained.
Sami Jan, the in-charge librarian, acknowledged that they have communicated students’ and locals’ demands and concerns to higher authorities. “There’s no resolution yet, but we’re hopeful that improvements will be made soon,” she assured.
