GENEVA, Dec 21: The World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded 493 attacks against medical facilities and services in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank since October 7, as a result of which almost 600 people have died, the WHO representative in the occupied Palestinian territory, Richard Peeperkorn, said on Thursday.
“Since the 7th of October, we have documented 493 attacks on health care in the occupied Palestinian territory,” Peeperkorn told a briefing in Geneva.
Between October 7 and December 20, 246 attacks on health care were documented in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the death of 582 people and in another 748 people injured, he added. The attacks caused damage to 61 medical facilities, including 26 hospitals out of 36, as well as to 76 ambulances, Peeperkorn said.
At the same time, 251 attacks on medical facilities were documented in the West Bank from October 7 to December 15, resulting in 7 deaths and 45 injuries, the WHO official said.
On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces said its soldiers uncovered about 1,500 Hamas’ tunnels and underground passageways in the Gaza Strip since October 7, adding that most of them were located under schools, hospitals, mosques as well as UN and civilian facilities.
Last Sunday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that only 8 hospitals out of 36 were operating in the Gaza Strip at the moment. (UNI)
