Damage to electric transformers in Kashmir on decrease

Srinagar, Dec 21 The damage to the electric transformers has decreased this year in Kashmir after installation of smart meters and a major crackdown against power thefts across the Valley.
In the central workshop of the Power Development Department in Pampore area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, 2500 transformers have been repaired since April this year, as compared to 4000 last year.
The facility is well-prepared for the increased energy demands expected in the upcoming winter months.
The dedicated workforce at the workshop is currently focused on repairing distribution transformers referred from various divisions across the Valley. These transformers, which local technicians were unable to rectify, initially underwent examination at divisional workshops.
Officials said they have successfully repaired 2500 distribution transformers since April this year, the number is expected to rise due to the escalating energy demands accompanying the plummeting temperatures.
“The repair involves several stages, culminating in testing and other necessary procedures before the transformers are returned to their respective divisions. Due to limited capacity, not all transformers undergo 100 percent repair at the workshop,” said Executive Engineer Azhar Hamid Mattu.
He said the Central Workshop Division in Kashmir, one of two such facilities in the Union Territory, is responsible for servicing 19 maintenance divisions.
Mattu emphasized the meticulous inspection and comprehensive dismantling process that each transformer undergoes, followed by multiple stages of repair, testing, and other necessary procedures before being returned to their respective divisions.
To cope with the overwhelming workload, Mattu said that they have roped in 23 small-scale industrial units for the purpose. “These units collaborate with the workshop, taking on repairs that exceed its capacity. After the repairs are completed, the transformers are returned to the workshop and then redistributed to their respective division”, he said.
